SM Sains Selangor out to retain rugby title(i dedicate this article to my father)actually this is just "kopi dan pasta" from star online

SM Sains Selangor out to retain rugby title

Dangerman: No. 8 Ahmad Faris Haziq of SMSS (with the ball) will be the player to watch.

IT will require a huge effort for other contenders to pushover the bulky forward pack of the reigning Federal Territories Schools Sports Council (MSSWP) Under-18 champions SM Sains Selangor (SMSS) in the new season.

And SMSS are expected to remain a force in the bid to retain the title and maintain their status as the top rugby side in the state schools competition.

Following their inspiring performances chalking up a memorable victory at the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Under-15 after a lapse of 15 years in Kangar, Perlis at the end of last year, three forwards from the winning squad in the 10-a-side tournament are set to continue to play prominent roles stepping up to the Under-18 age-group.

They are Saiffauzan Shamsulamri, Muhd Azreen Kamrulzaman and Ahmad Faris Haziq.

SMSS coach Raja Idris Raja Ali said the reliable trio are ready to take up the challenges in providing them plenty of options in naming their line-up with their ability to fit in more than one position.

“We can choose to field Saiffauzan and Azreen as either props on the front row or locks on the second row while Azreen can move from the No. 8 position at the back of the pack and perform the duties as one of the flankers. They have gained the experience with the exposure featuring in several older age-group tournaments. They are also physically strong enough to match the seniors. They will not face any major difficulties in fitting into our game plan,” he added.

At the MSSM boys’ Under-15 tournament, Saiffauzan and Azreen ended their campaign with remarkable personal achievements securing Best Forward and “Man of the Match” awards respectively.

In addition, Faris was also in impressive form winning the “Player of the Tournament” award.

“Faris had an outstanding season last year. He was also picked as the recipient of the similar award in two other tournaments. He will be eager to continue to show his promise in the new season,” said Raja Idris, adding that they have 35 trainees each in both the Under-15 and Under-18 training squad going through the paces six times a week.

Last year, SMSS failed to score a double with their Under-15 side settling for second when they went down to Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah (SSAS) in the MSSWP tournament.

And they will be aiming to flex their domination and emerge as the champions in the upcoming Under-15 and Under-18 contests.

“The defeat exposed our weaknesses in certain areas of the initial Under-15 team last year. We made the changes including dropping several non-performing players and showed encouraging progress as we went along last year. This year, we are confident that we have a balanced side with the Form Three students attempting to raise the standard and make a stronger impact. We have also identified several new Form One recruits to be included in the Under-15 side,” Raja Idris said.
